From a story in the New York times yesterday:

"A prayer service was held Monday afternoon on the seawall boulevard in front of the monument commemorating the Disaster of 1900, when a hurricane killed about 6,000 people.

Sixteen people held hands and bowed their heads as Tino Gonzalez, a parishioner from a local Roman Catholic church, struck an ambivalent tone about the island’s prospects.

'We must pray for each other even though Galvestonians are a resilient people,' he said after reciting the Lord’s Prayer. 'We also are going to pray that our city leaders make good choices.'”

Good choices like going somewhere else? There are better places to live than on islands and coasts that are regularly battered by catastophic storms. Instead of thinking about moving other places, people spend their time trying to build stronger houses, sea walls and levees. People will likely never accept the ultimate superiority of nature over their wills.
